by Richard SelznickSentient (January 2009)
I love this book because Dr. Selznick explains how while not all children learn the same way, they are often taught with methodologies that don't work for the spatial learner. Self-esteem takes a beating when a child sees his friends "getting it." So these bright, gifted children are left to feel stupid, not only because they can't learn the way others do, but also because the expectations of the teachers are that they should be learning. This was a great help to me in beginning to understand my child and advocate for his education.

The Dyscalculia Toolkit
The Dyscalculia Toolkit: Supporting Learning Difficulties in Maths
by Ronit BirdSage (2007)
To express math ideas, this book advises using concrete examples (with lots of explanation) before using abstract illustrations and then even more abstract math symbols, numerals, and language. While it oversimplifies the symptoms of dyscalculia, the book does show how certain teaching methods can pose barriers to learning for the learning disabled.

"Intel Reader is another terrific addition to our assistive technology portfolio," says Peter Beran, Senior Vice President, Information Technology for RFB&D. Getting started with the Intel Reader is easy for RFB&D members. They can simply log into their online accounts on the RFB&D website to obtain a free User Authorization Key (UAK), install it on the device, and download their DAISY audiobooks. The content can then be transferred to the Intel Reader and listened to anytime, anywhere. The device stores members’ third-party content access keys for their convenience. Recognizing the Signs of a Learning Disability

Specific learning disabilities, often referred to as hidden, are complex in nature, poorly understood and often hard to identify, though there are certain indicators or red flags seen in individuals with SLD. It is not uncommon for parents and teachers of primary school-age children to attribute the first signs of academic difficulties to “laziness or lack of motivation” as the cause. The root cause, however, is not remotely related to such things. Rather, SLD is an information-processing problem, is neurological in origin, life-long and manifests in areas such as reading, writing, spelling, comprehension and can even impact social skills. SLD affects some 10 percent of the population. When left undiagnosed, many with SLD are frustrated by the schools’ demands, fall behind and eventually drop out. Individuals with SLD are average to above-average in intelligence and a small percentage are gifted.

Early warning signs that your child may have a learning disability:

Preschool:

· Late talking compared to other children

· Pronunciation problems

· Slow vocabulary growth; often unable to find the right word

· Difficulty rhyming words

· Trouble learning numbers, the alphabet, days of the week

· Extremely restless and easily distracted

· Trouble interacting with peers· Poor ability to follow directions or routines

Grades K -4

· Slow to learn the connection between letters and sounds

· Confuses basic words (run, eat, want)

· Makes consistent reading and spelling errors including letter reversals (b/d), inversions (m/w), transpositions (felt/left) and substitutions (house/home)

· Transposes number sequences and confuses arithmetic signs

· Slow recall of facts

. Slow to learn new skills; relies heavily on memorization

The Learning Disabilities Association of Northeast Ohio works to educate individuals about SLD. The organization offers a number of programs and works together with local schools and other agencies to assure that those with SLD are identified properly and provided appropriate services so they “realize their potential and achieve their goals.” LDANEO will offer two programs this fall: One is an interactive social skills program for children in third through fifth grades. This six-week session explores practical strategies for addressing social communication and social skill development in elementary school. The second program is a unique learning opportunity called Parents and Teachers Together. This program will give parents and teachers an increased understanding of SLD, special education laws, evaluations and individualized education programs. Session topics include: An in-depth look at the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and Section 504, along with learning about the evaluation process – how a school district identifies a disability.

What's the Right Amount of Homework?????

1st-3rd grade- work should not exceed 20 minutes each school day

3rd –6thgrades- Many educators recommend from 30-60 minutes a school day for most students

7th –8th grades-Generally up to 2 hours a school day is thought to be
appropriate.

9-12 grade-The amount of homework will vary by subject as well as what projects, reports, papers, tests the students have. High school students might need help organizing assignments and planning work times.

Remember- Children need to know that their parents and adults close to them think homework is important. Keep a good attitude about your child work. If you have any worries talk with your child's teacher. When students know parent’s care and value education, assignments and work is more likely to be turned in on time.

1. Set a regular place and routine with your children

3. Remove distractions
4. Have school supplies available
